The low-Reynolds number spreading of axisymmetric drops and gravity currents along a free surface
نویسندگان
چکیده
Experimental results are presented for the spreading of buoyant drops and gravity currents along a free surface. The spreading occurs at low Reynolds number, and no interfacial tension exists between the spreading and ambient fluid. Theoretical results suggest that distinct spreading rates occur in three regimes: l!@ ln(R/a)#a/R, a/R!l!R/a , and l@R/a , where l is the ratio of the spreading and ambient fluid viscosities and R/a is the aspect ratio of the drop or current. Experimentally measured spreading rates in these three regimes show agreement with the theoretical solutions for long-term spreading. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~98!00811-3#

EFFECT OF TIME-DEPENDENT TRANSPIRATION ON AXISYMMETRIC STAGNATION-POINT FLOW AND HEATTRANSFER OF A VISCOUS FLUID ON A MOVING CIRCULAR CYLINDER
Effect of time dependent normal transpiration on the problem of unsteady viscous flow and heat transfer in the vicinity of an axisymmetric stagnation point of an infinite circular cylinder moving simultaneously with time-depended angular and axial velocities and with time-dependent wall temperature or wall heat flux are investigated. The impinging free stream is steady with a strain rate . A re...
متن کاملLattice Boltzmann Simulation of Deformation and Breakup of a Droplet under Gravity Force Using Interparticle Potential Model
Abstract In this paper interparticle potential model of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to simulate deformation and breakup of a falling droplet under gravity force. First this model is applied to ensure that the surface tension effect is properly implemented in this model. Two tests have been considered. First, it has been checked an initial square drop in a 2D domain can freely def...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of Saline Gravity Currents Using EARSM and Buoyant k- Turbulence Closures
Gravity currents are very common in nature and may appear in rivers, lakes, oceans, and the atmosphere. They are produced by the buoyant forces interacting between fluids of different densities and may introduce sediments and pollutants into water bodies. In this study, the hydrodynamics and propagation of gravity currents are investigated using WISE (Width Integrated Stratified Environments), ...
متن کاملLow-Reynolds-number gravity-driven migration and deformation of bubbles near a free surface
The gravity-driven migration of N ≥ 1 bubble(s) near a free surface is addressed within the assumption of negligible inertial effects by solving a boundary-integral equation at each time and assuming axisymmetric free surface and bubble(s) with axis of revolution aligned with the gravity. The implemented boundary element method permits one to accurately invert at a reasonable cpu time cost the ...
متن کاملLow Reynolds number suspension gravity currents.
The extension of a gravity current in a lock-exchange problem, proceeds as square root of time in the viscous-buoyancy phase, where there is a balance between gravitational and viscous forces. In the presence of particles however, this scenario is drastically altered, because sedimentation reduces the motive gravitational force and introduces a finite distance and time at which the gravity curr...
